Compatible with: Unity 2.6 and 3.0

Chris & TornadoTwins present:

One of the most anticipated prefabs of all-time! Over 3 coders and 3 artists have worked to get this off the ground over a span of five months.

This Character Kit is an incredible jumping off place for learning how to implement a fully controlled character in your own game!

There's full support for the following situations:

SWIMMING

  • Transitioning to swimming in water,
  • Buoyancy (physics based floating behavior of body in water)
  • Climbing out of a pool
  • Shimmy left/right while hanging on the pool's ledge

CLIMBING

  • Hanging from ledges
  • Shimmying side-to-side while hanging on ledge
  • Climbing up from ledge
  • Climbing ladders of any length (any number of ladders in your level)
  • Pull-up transition when reaching top of the ladder

MOVEMENT

  • Sliding off ramps that are too steep (with a Rigidbody)
  • Moving platforms (with a Rigidbody)
  • Jumping after an animation delay

INTERACTION

  • Picking up objects
  • Having the character hold the item he picked up

This kit comes with four pre-set camera kits that are modified to fit the character:

INCLUDED CAMERA BEHAVIORS:

  • Player Relative (camera follows character directly over-shoulder)
  • Camera Relative (camera follows character but faces direction set by the mouse)
  • First Person Shooter (camera attached to a bone inside the character's head)
  • Side Scroller (camera follows character from the side)

Although we recommend implementing your own character to fit your game, this kit comes with a character equipped with 17 animations

ANIMATIONS:

  • Idle while hanging
  • Move left while hanging
  • Move right while hanging
  • Hang + pull up transition to standing
  • Idle
  • Jump
  • Ladder climbing
  • Pick up object
  • Run backwards
  • Run forward
  • Strafe-run left
  • Strafe-run right
  • Swim forward
  • Swim to hang transition
  • Walk backwards
  • Walk forward
  • Jump with event
  • Pickup with event

Of course you can use the standard character in your game but you'll be happy to know this kit was built to support any character. We highly recommend constructing your own advanced character movements off of this kit.

EXTRA:

Extensions: For making notifications like 'Press F to pick up item' look really nice, simply import the UPMessenger and UPNotifications prefab and everything works right away!

Enjoy!

I'm considering to purchase it for education purposes. I'm having a big project for my final year. I would like to ask whether I could still get the discount for this prefab? thanks.

on October 22, 2010

Tornadotwins

@Thomax Usually the first week we release a prefab it's the lowest cost. We do have discounts occasionally after but I can't really say when or how much off it would be...

on October 22, 2010

Thomax

@Tornadotwins Ic, thanks for the info. I'm really considering buying it but i'm quite on low budget right now.. Hopefully when I have the money, the discount is still on. >.

@cbackass @Tornadotwins

I was seriously considering this, but each time I tried the demo it became unplayable within moments due to some issues with the camera system. I realize this is a "character kit" and perhaps you put the camera system into it in haste and as an afterthought, but I'm a huge stickler for camera behavior quality and its ability to make a great game play like garbage. Any idea why this is happening, and if this is the behavior I should be expecting from investing in this prefab? Is there any way in the demo to see some of the other camera behaviors?

Do you have some reproduction steps for how you get the camera to rotate like that in the demo? I've never seen that happen. While you're right that this is primarily a character kit, I would like to fix any actual bugs like that.

on October 24, 2010

Rflagg

@cbackas

Sure thing. It seems that if the cursor exits the bottom of the play frame and then re-enters from the top more than once, you end up with a really wonky camera. Since you can't lock the mouse into that window, it's easy to do if you're just sort of enthusiastically moving the mouse to play. I didn't even realize I was doing it the first few times I I played. Of course, I have the res on my screen cranked pretty high, so that window gets a little smaller for me. Could even come naturally from the tilt of someone's hand, I suppose.

Anyway, I hope this helps, and good luck selling your product!

on October 24, 2010

Cbackas

@Rflagg I confirmed the problem by spastically moving the mouse all over the screen while moving the character around. It's a strange one, but I'm going to take a quick look to see about fixing it. Thanks for pointing that out!

on October 24, 2010

Rflagg

@cbackas You don't have to be spastic. Drag your mouse down from the top of the play window to the bottom. Once you get to the bottom, circle the cursor around back to the top WITHOUT re-entering the play screen. Once back at the top, drag down again. It's kind of like doing loops in which you only pass through the game screen on the downward stroke. It must be some sort of additive behavior on the mouse's Y position.

on October 24, 2010

Cbackas

@Rflagg I found a solution to this, and to a similar problem in the "Camera Relative" camera. I'm repackaging everything to address it, but in the meantime if anyone who's purchased this kit wants the fixed script feel free to email me.

@Pathkiller If you'd like to be a little more constructive, I'm perfectly willing to look into any bugs that might exist. But I need more to go on than a vague taunt.

on October 25, 2010

Pathkiller

@Cbackas sorry didnt mean it like that....anyway i managed to swim ALL around the map and then start flying uncontrollably while still swimming....if u give me ur email address ill make a vid and send it

on October 26, 2010

Cbackas

@Pathkiller That sounds like a bug that I addressed last week (along with a couple of other minor things). The webplayer on the site hasn't yet been updated unfortunately. But just to be sure, you can click the "Contact" link in the upper right of the page to send me an email with a link to the video.

When you see the ladder and climbing ledge in Red you'll know the webplayer's been updated - I made them red at a customer's suggestion just so that you can more easily see that they're there.

on October 26, 2010

Pathkiller

@Cbackas okay im exporting the vid now i should be done in a few minutes

Tornadotwins

Thanks so much for your help, @Pathkiller! TornadoTwins

Jesseoffy

Ok, so on that account, do you recommend someone to use rigidbodies with their characters or charactercontroller? (I'm trying to achieve a similar thing to this prefab, but I have no budget) :)

on October 31, 2010

Rflagg

Total copy/paste fail on the first half of that post. :(

on October 30, 2010

Cbackas

@Rflagg I understand your concerns. I can't offer to do much, but if you want, use the "Contact" link near the upper-right to send me an email, and I can send you an updated webplayer with the bugs fixed for evaluation purposes. (Note: This goes for anyone else too until the site updates)

on October 30, 2010

Jesseoffy

I haven't bought this so I don't know if you're allowed to tell me this, but did you guys use a character controller or rigidbody with multiple colliders for each limb of the character? Thanks in advance for any help.

on October 31, 2010

Cbackas

@Jesseoffy No secret! It's a Rigidbody with a single collider.

You know this would be great to have, sadly I can't afford so I'll browse for cheaper but great looking prefab.

I bought this prefab and sadly, i can't get the water thing working. The character does not climb out, nor does he shimmy on the sides of the pool. Also when shimmying on the ledge, when shimmying left, the character does a strange upward move when key is released. These things also occur when playing the above preview. I am on an intel mac if that makes a difference. I understand this prefab is a starting point, but I would have expected a demo scene to work reasonably well. Just seems glitchy to me, and I am a little disappointed with this product. Esp considering the price.

Coin-god

mmm, like the guy above says, this is very buggy. I can't get out of the water in the demo. Sometimes the camera does weird movements aswell. Its glitchy, considering the price. It would take me some time to understand how your scripts work to fix it. I would rather write it myself, and save the money.

(Constructive criticism)

on April 4, 2011

Th3serg

Yeah.... I payed for this and it's been REALLY buggy like they mentioned above about not being able to climb out. I also have a problem, I think it's concerning the camera, but when I put a new terrain in and put the character on that terrain, the camera always moves BELOW the terrain I can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lswain

hey i just bought this and its giving me some trouble. im not sure if i imported it into my game the properly. i just tried dragging the 3.0 file into my project window. I got an error about the library folder file name not bing allowed... so i changed the name to lib and dragged it again into my project window. It worked importing but all the textures are gone the character prefab camera models dont work and i dont think the script are attached they wont open as java script... im lossing my mind i cant even play my game anymore the screen just says all compiler errors have to be fixed before i can go into gameplay mode. i have the indie version by the way and have tried to load this pack many times to get it to work. Even when its deleted from the project menu i seem to be getting these errors. Please help im going nuts.
